Stop taking it personally.

I overheard a conversation the other day between two people discussing someone they both knew. They were trying to figure out why this person had suddenly stepped away from the group. They couldn't understand why this individual stopped engaging with their social media posts, stopped showing up to events, and seemingly fell off the face of the earth.

As I listened, I couldn't help but think about something I've been experiencing over the past six months.

For years, especially during the pandemic, I was very active on social media. I posted regularly, engaged with others, and spent a considerable amount of time in online spaces. Then, little by little, I decided to take a step back. I started spending less time scrolling and more time being present in my everyday life. I became more intentional about my relationships, my peace, and how I spent my time.

I chose to be more present with the people sitting across from me instead of always looking down at my phone. You know what surprised me most was the reaction I got.

Someone who claimed to care about me called me out for my absence. Instead of reaching out to ask if I was okay, if I needed support, or if something was going on in my life, they took my withdrawal personally. They interpreted my absence as though it was directed specifically at them. What in the whole wide world!!!

But here's the thing: not everything is about you or me for that matter.

Sometimes people step back because they are tired. Sometimes they are healing or maybe even grieving. Sometimes they are reevaluating priorities, protecting their peace, focusing on their family, or simply trying to reconnect with themselves. I know I have been doing my best to reconnect with myself.

Their absence is not always a statement about how they feel about you.

We live in a world where constant access has become the norm. If someone doesn't comment, like, share, text, call, or show up, people often assume the worst. We create stories in our minds about being ignored, rejected, or forgotten when the reality may be far different. Believe me when I say, I have created those same stories myself.

What if, instead of taking it personally, we became curious?

What if we reached out with compassion instead of assumptions?

What if we asked, "How are you doing?" instead of saying, "Why haven't you been around?"

Those simple shifts can make all the difference.

I've learned that seasons of stepping back are sometimes necessary. They give us room to breathe, reflect, grow, and focus on what truly matters. The people who genuinely care about us won't make our absence about themselves. They'll check in. They'll offer support. They'll leave space for us to return when we're ready.

The next time someone becomes less visible, resist the urge to assume their actions are a reflection of you. Sometimes people aren't pulling away from you at all—they're simply trying to find their way back to themselves.

Have you ever stepped back from social media, a friend group, or a community for a season? How did people respond? And if you've been on the other side, what assumptions did you make? Share your thoughts in the comments. Let's start choosing compassion over assumptions and connection over criticism.

Sending you love, light and positive vibes,

Cassie K.
